They rang it to announce cocktail hour on the porch.
One would be in the garden, and the other mixing drinks in the kitchen.
And the bell would ring and they'd call out in silly snooty voices to each other about hors d'oeuvres and aperitifs being served on the west veranda.
They cracked themselves up.
And we, at the age when they seemed most embarrassing and least comprehensible, were too busy piling into someone's back seat, desperate to get somewhere before the night was over, to do more than roll our eyes.
I thought of that bell tonight.
When I had been setting the table in the backyard.
We were having a dinner, a birthday dinner.
Well, a half birthday, actually.
We'd started a tradition a ways back when we were all a bit low and in need of more things to celebrate.
