At my own birthday, the host had learned a bit of calligraphy, and we sat down to hand-lettered name cards propped in little stands before our plates.

On another night we sat around a bonfire and managed to eat a full meal of foods we could roast on long sticks in the flames.

Today I spent the morning watching videos, learning to fold napkins in various fancy ways, and I had done a different fold for each person.

I laid them out on the plates, tucking a few flowers in between the knives and forks.

I laughed at that, as if the stem of a brown eyed Susan was as necessary a utensil for the meal.

As a soup spoon.

Which depending on your point of view.

It might be.

With the table set, I plugged in a string of lights that I'd hung between the oak tree and the edge of the house.

I was just stepping back from it all.

Imagining how it would look to our friends when they arrived.

The long tables stretched out under the lights, the flowers and napkins and platters of food.

We were making stuffed peppers with wild rice.

And roasted asparagus and a salad with hearts of palm and lemon dressing, and a big orange cake, currently chilling in the fridge per the request of the half birthday boy.

But it felt like something was missing.

I was being watched from the kitchen where the finishing touches were going on.

And my mind was apparently being read because I heard the ringing of a bell.

I turned to look back at the house and saw one sitting on the kitchen window sill, newly silent.

I recognized it from that garage sale a while back.

It was the kind that stands upright a handbell.
