We usually have a man dominating the woman, so her back curves backwards and he leans over to kiss her.
And so the 19th century, the acceptable heteronormative kiss is always one where a woman shows submission.
And I think we think of that and go, oh, well, that's just patriarchal marriages.
That's, you know, for all of history.
And you're like, no, this is a very 19th century set of gender relationships where they want to really demonstrate this kind of,
of imbalance of power to make heteronormative kisses seem sexy.
And so it's kind of interesting when you see the art and you see how it changes and how it opens up different kinds of stories about gender and power that perhaps we hadn't quite anticipated we'd find.
In that particular kiss, she's maybe not even letting it happen because she didn't consent to the kiss.
He runs up to her and he does it to more than one woman, right?
So it's not even like she's the only victim of this man.
He runs up, he grabs her, he forces her back, he kisses her.
You see her hands like this in the photograph, kind of on his chest, which could be seen as a sort of romantic.
But actually, and there's more than one photograph, so you can actually look at the sequence.
She's pushing him off and she does, she pushes him off.
And I think the reason it's so iconic, and before we knew the backstory, which kind of is now almost as famous as... Cloud of it, yeah.
Before we knew that, I think the reason we saw it as a passionate kiss is because all of these 1970 paintings had taught us that the passionate kiss has this kind of submissive looking woman with her bent back and the man over the top.
And they seem to really capture that iconography really well.
But the fact was, in this case, it was just an assertion of power.
It was an assault on this woman in this moment of real glee, I guess, following the end of the war.
And he was being riotous, kind of riotous.
