But actually it used to be like maybe the dad has to give permission for this kiss or maybe a husband has to give permission for a kiss.
So there's this kind of ongoing conversation about consent that goes on for hundreds of years.
And I think we see the modern end and we see the Me Too movement and we see all of that, but we forget actually, oh, we've been arguing about this for a long time.
And so we sometimes actually have much richer, longer histories that maybe help us contextualise
Our modern discomforts maybe is the wrong word, because it suggests that you shouldn't need consent, and you absolutely do.
But you know, the sense that our anxieties now aren't new or of this moment or unique.
In fact, we've had lots of these feelings about the kiss for a long time.

And actually, I quite like the ones that I find intellectually the most interesting are the ones where you kiss God or you kiss other people thinking that they're the divine.
And so we have lots of these incredibly impassioned letters of people talking about their erotic fantasies for Jesus or for other religious figures.
I put my tongue deep in Jesus's mouth and you're like, you did what?
And it's just a fantasy.
But nonetheless, the fact that they were so open about writing that, about sharing that with others, it wasn't like this was an extremely private, deep thought that you kept to yourself.
It was a sort of a neuro in your diaries and you wrote in letters and you shared with people.
And so these kinds of erotic fantasies, I think are some of the hardest things for us to get our head around, right?

to think about Christ and Christ and kissing Christ with kisses that we would think, oh, that's a bit inappropriate.
