Now, Rheumatomania was never accepted as a legitimate scientific diagnosis outside of a small circle of pro-slavery physicians and today it is universally acknowledged as pseudoscience rooted in racism rather than medicine or as I like to call it, absolute bollocks.
But it is an important reminder that medicine has at times been used to defend existing power structures instead of questioning them.
Because when oppression is treated as normal, resistance can begin to look like illness.
