Medicine strives to be objective.
Humans, not so much.
Before the 1960s, schizophrenia was commonly portrayed in psychiatric literature as an illness characterised by withdrawal, emotional flatness, passivity and retreat from reality.
Images in medical textbooks often showed anxious white housewives or socially isolated white men.
Now, the illness was frightening, certainly, but it wasn't generally portrayed as violent or politically threatening.
Then America changed.
The civil rights movement gathered momentum.
You get sit-ins, freedom rides, the march on Washington.
You've got urban uprisings.
You've got police violence broadcast on national TV.
Black Americans demanding rights.
They'd been promised for generations, but consistently denied.
And suddenly, public discussions about race became saturated with fear, right?
