San Francisco's immigration court will shift its backlog of more than 100,000 cases to a smaller court in the East Bay next year.

That court in Concord was set up to handle overflow and has just five judges.

The case is believed to be the first in California to go before a jury since a change in state law in 2019 led to hundreds of similar reports of abuse.

Attorney Rick Simmons, who represented the 61-year-old victim at trial, says the verdict is an indication of how those cases throughout the state could play out in court.

The Diocese of Oakland says since the flood of allegations, it has implemented policies to protect youth and saw an equitable settlement for the more than 300 victims in its purview.
