I think one of the things that I found really difficult about Stephen is everybody around him said that this guy would never, never do something wrong.
But it's very hard to understand how you could be that senior within the finance department and not have spotted problems.
But he always said he wasn't guilty.
And he left these astonishing diaries that he started writing when he was out in the States, living away from his family who were still based here in the UK.
And yeah, just kept sort of asserting his innocence through it all.
Flawed.
Brilliant.

Yes, he really was.
And I describe him as an outlier in my book in many ways, because he did not come from a very wealthy family or go to one of Britain's top schools.
And of course, the UK is a very, very rigid society.
He had Irish immigrant parents, as you describe, and grew up just outside London in Essex.
He was phenomenally bright.
And he was born in
the really exciting part of the computing era.
And he was always very, very fascinated by tech.
He ended up getting a place at Cambridge.
And while a lot of his peers were turning to the city at that time, during the Big Bang in the 80s, where people were making a lot of money, he decided to stay on and pursue a PhD.
And that's really how his entrepreneurial journey began.
