It's recognized in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely ratified treaty in the world.

What is marriage from the perspective of child defense?

It is the only relationship that unites the two people to whom they have a natural right.

And if you can defend that fundamental natural right by granting children, both people responsible for their existence in a lifelong union, you will exempt children from all of the major social ills that we decry and that we spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to fund.

You will make sure that they are the most likely to graduate

from high school, the least likely to be involved in crime, the least likely to be teen pregnant, the lowest suicide rates, the ones that are going to have the fewest behavioral issues and substance abuse issues.

They're the least likely to be homeless.

They're far, far less likely to live in poverty.

If you can defend this fundamental natural right of children to be raised by their own mother and father, children are going to thrive.

Marriage is the tool that nearly every society throughout history has used to deliver it to them.

Marriage is primarily a matter of justice for children.

What you've just done is you've set up three different scenarios of brokenness.

Notice that none of those involve wholeness for the child.

So if you want to debate which form of brokenness is worse, fine, we can have that debate.

But first, we agree on the non-negotiable.

There is, according to sociologists on the left and the right, one primary pathway for child thriving and is the one where they do not have to lose their mother or father to be in that home.

So like we can talk like what's better, what's worse.

First, we agree.

Children raised by their own married mother and father are the least likely to suffer any of those social ills.

They're developmentally advantaged.
