Yes, I had read Uh Tennyson's In Memoriam, I guess when I was seventeen or so.
And um after my first psychotic break, psychotic depression.
And I had been hit at the time by how much Tennyson wrote about restlessness and despair and unpredictability and the violence of intense moods and and intense missings and so
forth.
When Richard died, I went back and reread it.
And I was just amazed at the poem.
And he writes over the seasons and over the years and from Christmas to Christmas and New Year's to New Years and from death dates to death dates and springs to springs.
So he ties it in incredibly to the natural world
And the life and death that
exists in a powerful relationship, in this case a relationship with with his close friend.
how he came back to to life via all this incredible suffering and perturbance.
I was struck by the passion of the poem I guess and by the subtlety.
one of the most famous excerpts is actually emblematic of the progression of the seasons and the progression of Tennyson's emotional response to the death of his friend.
Ring out wild bells to the wild sky, the flying cloud, the frosty light, the year is dying in the night.
Ring out wild bells and let him die.
Ring out the old ring in the new, ring happy bells across the snow.
The year is going, let him go.
Ring out the false, ring in the new, ring out the grief that saps the mind.
Um what Tennyson does over and over and over again is uh to set in next to one another the eking out of life if you grieve too much, but the need to really be grieving in order to understand what has gone on and and move on in life.
