A demon that walks among us.
That's what former Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said about Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Huerman during an announcement of the elusive suspect's arrest in 2023.
Harrison was tapped to run the 2,500-member Department of the Eastern Part of Long Island, the 12th largest in the country, after retiring from the NYPD where he spent 30 years in various investigative and executive roles.
His last was chief of department, the highest uniform position in the organization.
He worked on numerous headline-grabbing investigations over the years, but he may be best known for orchestrating the law enforcement task force that finally led to Huerman's capture.
Huerman was the epitome of someone who lives a double life.
He lived in Massapequa with a wife and two kids.
His house was about 20 minutes from where his victims were callously dumped.
He worked in midtown Manhattan as an architect.
But he had a penchant for escorts and immersed himself in deeply disturbing topics on the internet involving rape and torture.
His victims were dismembered or bound and wrapped in burlap and scattered around a quiet coastal stretch of sand dunes and vegetation.
