But in my everyday English, sometimes my children will come to me with a simple problem.
Like one of my sons has this remote controlled monster truck and he can never refine the remote for it to control it.
And so he says, you know, I can't find it.
And so I'll say, oh, let's get to the bottom of this.
Let me go look.
Let me go search for it.
It just means I'm trying to figure out where it went.
Now, if you're not very familiar with basketball, you definitely don't know what this phrase means.
And basketball is definitely one of those more popular American sports.
So it's very possible you've never heard this.
If someone says that something is a layup.
It means it's very easy to do.
In basketball, when you shoot the ball from directly underneath the board, the backboard and the basketball hoop, that's called a layup.
It's as close as you can get to take a shot.
So in the workplace, someone might say, hey, great job on that presentation.
You really explained it well.
And you could say, well, for me, it was a layup because I'm an expert on that topic.
Meaning it was really easy.
It was easy to do because I'm so, you know, informed about it.
So you use this phrase if something is really easy to do or easy to complete for you.
