Diné legends tell stories about the Nakani, which is a race of giants that live in the Nahanni Valley.
They are dormant during the winters, but from the spring through the fall, they are to be feared.
You know one if you saw one.
They are enormous.
They're described as being hairy with red eyes and these gorilla-like arms.
It's kind of like a local version of Bigfoot.
Now, we have a number of written accounts that tell us belief in the Nakani was palpable and very present in the valley.
Both Diné and the white explorers have reports of finding unnaturally large footprints in the region, and Diné tribesmen would sometimes move camp entirely to avoid encounters with what they described as wandering Nakani.
One trader mentioned a group of Diné firing muskets into the woods to ward off Nakani that were passing too close to their encampment.
And this belief is perhaps why, at least according to Diné language expert Alan Adam, the old native word for the Nahanni River, Na-Adi, means river of giants.
And it's easy to write the Nakani off as a primitive superstition.
And that's what a lot of explorers in the area did.
But what makes the Nakani something more than just that is that their description remains very remarkably consistent throughout the Northwest Territories and beyond.
Some of these stories of the Nakani come from as far west as Alaska.
Anthropologists tend to say that the Nakani is just a boogeyman story like any other.
Perhaps it was like a relic or a folk memory of hostile encounters with another tribe.
