Late in the morning on June 1st, 1987, the phone rang in the home of a 43-year-old Fresno, California man named John Richmond.

On the other end was an administrator at a 16-year-old niece's high school.

His niece, Teresa, who lived with him, hadn't shown up for school that day, and the administrator was curious as to why.

Thinking fast, John told the school that Teresa was homesick and he had simply forgotten to call in.

but he knew that that was a lie.

He hadn't seen Teresa since early that morning,

Earlier that day, his friend, a 43-year-old man named Skip Welch, had come by and offered to take Teresa to school.

There had to be an explanation for this as to why Teresa never made it to her classes, he thought.

But when he tried calling Skip, the landline just kept ringing.

So John started calling around to some of his other friends.
