Now, the events of May 27th and 28th would later be reconstructed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from interviews with dozens of partygoers, cell phone records, and the one piece of surveillance footage that captured Maddie that evening.
So early that evening, Maddie swung by a liquor store and picked up a six-pack of beer, a bottle of wine, and snacks for the party.
The store's surveillance camera caught her on video, grabbing supplies and heading out to her truck.
Now, this would become one of the last images of Maddie that anyone would ever see.
Maddie and Geordie then headed out to Hogsback Lake in Maddie's pickup.
It was about a 23 kilometer drive from town, mostly on good roads.
There was a
little bit of gravel on the last stretch.
And by the time they pulled in, it was starting to get pretty dark.
Hogsback Lake was a popular local spot for swimming, fishing, and camping.
The lake itself is pretty small, it's about 128 acres.
It's only 22 feet at its deepest, but it's scenic and it's quiet.
And if you're young, you can drink there and people don't really bother you.
When Maddie and Geordie pulled in at around 8 p.m.
on Friday, about 50 people were already gathered around the campfire.
As Maddie started unpacking, she realized that she had brought the wrong tent poles.
So she told Geordie to wait for her, and she drove the half hour back to her parents' house to grab the right ones.
Her mom was home, they spoke briefly, and then Maddie was out the door again at around 9 p.m.
She was back at Hogsback Lake by 9:30, pitching her tent and sharing her drinks and snacks with her friends.
Geordie watched as Maddie gathered the courage to go up and talk to that boy she had gone there for.
