Sure, he was kind of the reason they were there in the first place due to his navigational guesstimates, but maybe he could help the men organize until help somehow found them.
But five days passed, and then six, and Captain Dalgarno gave no orders, no instructions.
He didn't even try to come up with a plan.
Instead, Robert watched as he sat against the cliff face with the other officers while the crew scattered along the beach, scraping snails off of rocks, chewing kelp, drinking from a nearby waterfall.
This was going to be every man for himself.
And that really hardened something inside of Robert.
He was just a sailor.
He was the newest guy aboard.
He didn't have any friends in the crew and no authority to give any orders.
But the officers weren't leading.
Dalgarno hadn't lifted a finger since they washed ashore.
And if someone didn't do something,
they were all gonna become seagull food.
So Robert spotted a crack in the cliff face, a rough seam in the rock that kind of worked as a path.
If they could get to higher ground, maybe they would find animals on this island.
There could even be sheep here.
Every hillside like this back in Australia where they had come from had sheep on it.
And Robert spent summers prospecting around Melbourne and there were always sheep.
And so Robert started climbing this cliff.
It was 2,000 feet.
