It was something beyond...
you know, normal sport and emotion.
It's kind of hardwired into, I feel, male people's identity, this thing, their love of Gaelic football.
That's sort of what interested me in writing that book in the first place.
20 years ago now, as you say, and the county was at a bit of a low ebb after taking a really bad beating in the Ireland final by Kerry, a final that maybe they weren't expected to get to, but they did.
And I just began speaking to people, you know, of that era, David Brady, John Martin, you know, the late, the late great John O'Mahony, who did so much for this revival.
You know, what intrigued me was they'd won three All-Irelands, 36, 15, 51.
But, you know, this was 2006, but they never really allowed that tradition to kind of go into abeyance.
You know, they always carried themselves with a certain sort of, you know,
expectation and demands on themselves which really kind of intrigued me and I kind of wanted to know what it was about and I felt it was all tied into the fact that you know it was a big county, it's a western seaboard county
It's an immigrant county.
It's got a lot of big kind of tiny towns.
And football just means so much to them in a different way, I think, to most other counties.
You know, it really is their badge of identity.
And the longer this went on...
the more kind of mysterious I think it became to, to, to Mayo as a, as a, as a people, you know, and would they get there?
When would they get there?
But it wasn't really about them losing finals or missed points or own goals or any of that crack.
It was more the fact that they would just always keep coming back, you know, and that they never, ever, they never quit on us.
Even, even in those lean years.
