Hi, my name is Keith Rushing.

I'm the author of Descended, Searching for My Gullah Geechee Roots.

I began research on this book about 15 years ago.

I'm a former journalist, print journalist that worked at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Virginia.

I now work at a nonprofit in Washington, D.C.

I think there's a lot that can just fulfill you in that process.

I think I'm still gaining and learning.

For me, I think back about, I grew up in New York City.

It's my favorite city, probably always will be.

But I realized in doing this research and going back to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where my grandmother was born and where my ancestors were as far back as I know,

I feel just connected spiritually.

I feel connected to the place.

I go to the Gullah Geechee Cemetery, the ancestral cemetery where people are buried, and I walk and visit, and I actually feel kind of like just a certain groundedness and a certain feeling that this is home.

And it's not something that I can say like,

It's like an intellectual thing.

It's kind of an emotional and spiritual thing that's really deep in me.

So I think if people do have those questions and they want to know, I would say research as much as you can.

If you can go back to graveyards, if you can go back to a place, you may feel things that you didn't know you were going to feel.

It may not just be information.

It may be kind of an emotional and spiritual connection that you get in that process.
