same ground at two in the morning year after year and never lands anywhere.
And look at what Paul says in the very next verse about what godly sorrow actually did in Corinth.
He says, See what this godly sorrow has produced in you?
What earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done?
Not one item in that list is a feeling.
Every single one is an action toward the truth.
the truth, an action toward the people they had wronged, toward setting things right.
That's the difference between Peter and Judas.
Judas's sorrow ran away from Jesus, away from the temple, away from the disciples, away from the possibility of being forgiven, and finally it ran away from life itself.
Peter's sorrow ran toward, toward other people, toward the empty tomb on Sunday morning, and ultimately back to Jesus.
Sorrow isn't the test.
No, the test is about the direction you're headed.
So to go back to what John the Baptist said, how do you know if your repentance is genuine?
Well, let me give you a few questions.
Here's the first one.
It's the consequences question.
If no one ever found out and nothing was lost, not my job, not my reputation, not my marriage, would I still hate this sin?
See, if the sorrow for my sin evaporates the moment the danger passes, then it was never really about the sin, it was about the exposure.
I wasn't sad or grieved that I had sinned, I just was sad and grieved that I got caught in my sin.
