But if that's true, it's only partially true.

Because in Matthew, the miracles are the message.

They're the message in physical form.

They demonstrate what a kingdom will be like.

See, Isaiah had already told Israel what the arrival of God's reign would look like when it finally came.

In Isaiah 35, he says, the eyes of the blind will be open, the ears of the blind.

Of the deaf unstopped, the lame leaping.

In Isaiah 61, he says, Good news will be preached to the poor, the brokenhearted bound up, prisoners released.

So when Jesus opens blind eyes and unbends bent bodies, he's not doing something adjacent to his preaching.

He's saying, This is what it looks like when God takes the throne of the world.

Argument himself in Matthew chapter 11.

There, John the Baptist is in prison, and he sends word to ask, Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?

And Jesus says, Go tell John what you see.

The blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the poor have good news preached to them.

The works are the answer.

And in Matthew 12, he makes it explicit.

He says

But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
