So I'm in the middle of the pitch with a player 10 yards to the right, 10 yards to the left.
And I'm just in no man's land thinking, if I go left, he's passed right.
If I go right, he'll pass left.
So what I did was get one of the centre midfielders to drop low with me again so we could do that.
But then they have Pispages and then you're thinking...
this is like a game of chess and you're trying to just figure things out on the fly and work from there and do you know the thing that breaks my heart we got undone by a set piece then I was in I was doing the front post area and a player ran about five yards beyond me so I tracked him to a certain extent and thought I leave him now flicked it on back post header and I blame Bermo Bermo blamed me Liam Buckley blamed me so I think I got the sharp end of it but I love it I love the tactical battle and having to figure it all out yourself I
John is obviously a clever bloke the manager of Sligo he would have had little whiffs that maybe Hardy was moving on before he took the Shelbourne job so I don't think it would have come as a complete surprise I haven't got my finger on the pulse of what's going on at Shelbourne but given how well Hardy has played over the last couple of years it's not a surprise to me so I can't imagine a surprise to many within the building at Shelbourne
The one thing I would love to know, Vinnie would know an awful lot more about this than me, which way does John Russell go about it now?
Because I remember having a chat with him at Sligo and I'm talking about the style of play they have at Sligo, how they attract players to come here, prove them as players and then maybe go back to their parent clubs.
At Shelbourne, it's about winning at the here and now.
So does he now think, well, I want to play total football like I did at Sligo or some sort of version of that?
Or does he go a little bit more attritional and think, well, I can't get my point across on the training ground in such a short period of time, so I'm going to give the lads the basics and then we'll go from there and they'll go little bit by little bit?
Or does he go straight in at the deep end and say, no, this is my tactics, get used to them from now on?
I think that's sound advice.
To be honest, I think tactics come secondary to me in terms of everything.
If you can motivate a dressing room and get players on side and get them wanting to work, I think you're on to a winner.
And then, like you say, John can start to implement these little tactics bit by bit.
But I think getting players on side, lifting those shoulders and getting people wanting... And I'm not saying they don't want to go into work, but just getting out of bed and going, I can't wait to go to training.
I mean, when you have that type of dressing room and that feel...
