I was very terrified early in my career when I was told I had to have a niche because I thought I was becoming a generalist and I thought I was going into geriatrics because I kind of liked everything. matched

And I've talked to many mentees over the years who get similar terror when they're told like, okay, you're starting a 30 year research career and you're supposed to know everything you're going to be doing right now. matched

I think, you know, maybe I shouldn't. matched

I like to call myself unfocused. matched

Maybe that's the wrong word that I think there's several ways to think about it is that ideas can be broad. matched

So being focused doesn't mean you have to be narrow and that ideas have interconnection so that over time, you know, you really have opportunities to do a lot of broad things. matched

Seth Landefeld, who was one of my pivotal mentors, who guided me through a lot of my early career. matched

And I remember, like, I think he's told this to many people. matched

I remember, you know, the comment when I kind of gave him like a running list of ideas that seemed all disconnected, him telling me, well, Ken, you know, matched

You can do so much more in series than you can in parallel. matched

His polite way of telling me, I think advice had really stood the test of time. matched
