And I realised that all these ringers that came and got drunk on a Friday night had to get home.
They had to get back to the station.
And the station could be a few miles away or it could be up to 40, 50 miles away.
There was one particular station called Mellish Park where I was working for a short time.
And these ringers would need a lift home.
So I figured out that I could be their taxi driver.
So I started this taxi service every Friday night, sort of midnight when the pub would close.
And I would take all these drunks back and I'd fill the back of the truck, literally fill it with about 10 people.
And you were 12.
I'm 12 years old.
I had to sit on a pillow because it was a very big steering wheel.
It was probably about a 45-minute drive and I would drive them out there and then I would pull up and they'd be all drunk and asleep, all asleep in the back of the truck.
So I'd have to β I couldn't wake them up because I wasn't strong enough.
So I'd have to try and get one or two awake and then drag all the rest of them off the truck onto the ground and
It was really tough getting them off out of the vehicle because some of them would fall asleep in the front.
And it was, yeah, it was a regular routine.
I'd get paid $50 for that.
So when your family decided to leave the pub, how did you feel about that?
Were you ready to leave that life or were you happy out there in your own way?
No, no, I was happy.
