But it was that it was a documentary about all of the pipeline protests.
And I just kind of sparked something in me wanting to explore that world.
And I was very hesitant.
You know, I had to really assess if that was a story that
That I felt like I should tell or that I could tell.
And I set certain kind of like expectations for myself.
Like these are the things you have to do if you're going to write this story.
Because I have seen people who are not black women write black women's stories.
And sometimes I'm like, oh, maybe you shouldn't have done that.
You know, and I didn't want that.
And I also didn't want to take up space that was someone else's if I didn't feel like I could do this story justice.
And I saw a lot of common ground between what Indigenous women in this country navigate and what Black women in this country navigate.
But before I wrote that, I have seen a lot of harmful representation of
of indigenous people written by people who are not indigenous.
And so I had to really interrogate that for myself before I wrote that book.
And I found a lot of people that I wanted to talk to.
And there were some of them who were like, I'm not sure that I want to talk to you because the last time I talked to somebody, they wrote a really bad book or they
And one of them even said to me, I will talk to you if you read these books.
And she gave me like three books to read.
And I read them all.
