Do you look at the price tag much when you buy things? So if you, I don't know, you walk into a nice clothing store, are you thinking about how much it costs?
What do you think is the difference then? What do you think justifies like a good purchase versus a bad purchase?
Yeah, I think you're in a unique position because you have experienced... pretty much every economic class there is to experience in a way. I mean, you haven't experienced real poverty, but you did not grow up wealthy, and now you're extremely wealthy. And the way I kind of think about, like, And you talked about there are certain people that can't make those trade-offs that we're describing.
It feels like there's a progression when it comes to spending. It's like in a certain economic weight class, you can't make trade-offs because you have to survive and you have to get by. And then there's another class, which is you start being able to make trade-offs. And then there's another one where I feel like you are, where it's like...
you don't even really need to be making trade-offs that much. I mean, it sounds like you can... generally speaking, have your cake and eat it too in most situations, I would say. So what I would be interested to know is like, how has the psychology of spending money changed for you as you have breached each of those economic weight classes?
Like did spending money take on a different gravitas to you as you got richer or as you got poorer?
Yeah, I feel like people don't seem to understand how good it feels to be generous. I think I started, only started to realize this recently, that it does actually feel really, really good to get the check and give someone a nice experience.
I mean, I did that recently with my dad for the first time, and it was kind of like, it felt like this sort of exciting, important moment where it's like, no, I can get this. Like, I can give to you. And... Yeah, I mean, it sounds so trite when you say it, but the reality is just as you say it, it's like, it actually just makes you feel really good.
And it's almost the same as getting something for yourself. It's all, as you say, it's all, it's selfishly motivated. It makes you feel good, but it seems like, I've just found, I'm surprised by how many people don't realize that, that like, it's really enhances your life and your own personal experience to be generous.
Yeah. Wow. I 100% agree with that. I think that's one of the things that makes relationships so fun is that you're building something new. together, it's just so much more exciting than doing it on your own.
We've got more after the break. And by the way, we'll be recording an Ask Me Anything episode very soon. So please send in your questions for me and Scott to officehoursatprofgmedia.com or leave a comment on our YouTube channel. We'll be right back.
I'm going to go through some individual situations where spending is very important. And I just want to get your reaction on how you would deal with these little situations I've come up with. So the first one is restaurants. You're out to dinner with friends. And let's imagine you're not as wealthy as you are right now for this. One of your friends orders a really expensive bottle of wine.
They order like a bunch of plates for the table. And then when the check arrives, it's way more expensive than you thought. It's one of those checks where you see it and you start to feel kind of anxious and uncomfortable. You don't really know what to do. So what would you do? Would you still offer to get the check? Would you split it equally? How would you handle that?
What about if you're in your 30s? It's not as absurd to be in your late 30s, everyone's making good money, maybe everyone's with their partners. What do you do in that situation?
Okay, this one's particularly relevant right now. Christmas is around the corner. Let's say again, you're in your late thirties. You've got like two children, a partner, two parents, you got aunts, you got uncles, you got friends, godchildren, et cetera. Who gets presents? And how much do you think you should be spending on those presents? And do you spend more on one person?
Do you spend less on another person? How do you think about presents and Christmas as it relates to spending?
Because I will say, by the way, you get presents for us at the end of the holidays. I don't know if you know what you're getting us, but we have received Christmas gifts from you. And I would assume that that's sort of part of, you know, you build that into the budget. Okay. Over the holidays, I need to put aside this amount of money to get my employees some gifts and to get these people gifts.
Like, I feel like it's an important part of the income statement, if you will.
Gladly. We've got a special episode today, Scott. We are diving into one of our favorite topics. We're not going to be talking about saving money or even investing money. We're going to be talking about spending money. We're going to be answering questions like, what are the best ways to spend money? How should we think about spending? And most importantly, how do you spend your money?
Yeah, that is so nice.
We'll be right back after the break. If you're enjoying the show so far, hit follow and leave us a review on Croft G Markets, wherever you get your podcasts.
I want to move on to some things around what is essential to spending, like what kind of things in your life you find essential. I mean, we talk a lot about like discretionary versus non-discretionary and the technical definition of non-discretionary is like the stuff you can't live without. So, you know, food and housing costs and health insurance, et cetera.
So I'll walk us through a series of questions about spending. You'll give me your honest answers, I hope, and then hopefully we'll learn something along the way.
But I can imagine that as you get richer, that category sort of starts to expand. Like, you know, I sort of feel like I can't live without an iPhone at this point. Like that's sort of the way I think about it. So I guess my question for you is like, what stuff can you not live without at this point? What do you have to spend on? And what is your approach to spending on those items?
Yeah, I was going to ask, like, have you ever sort of downsized your lifestyle because you just couldn't afford it anymore?
Yeah. I feel like that's a really... That's a big one for me. Just the prospect of downsizing. The way I have it in my head right now is like... I'm doing forced savings, so I'm good. I'm being responsible. How are you doing that? How are you doing forced savings? I have the automatic 5% that goes into the 401k, and then you match that.
And then I'm also just immediately, when I get by the beginning of the year, I just take a chunk of cash and just put it in the IRA, and that's the end of it.
It is going to be very thoughtful. It's practically going to be a therapy session.
And part of the reason I do that is like... i want to spend a lot and this might sound dumb but i i i like nice things and i like nice restaurants and i like going out to cool places and i spend a lot of money on on all of those experiences and part of it for me is that i want to kind of surround myself in that world and and get myself
deep in that position such that I have no choice but to go on and make a lot of money. And I think the scary thing for me is the idea that at some point, you know, this podcast stops being successful and I sort of find myself at a crossroads and suddenly I can't do all of this anymore. I And that's the thing that I'm gambling with. I need to make sure that I'm working so hard that I can keep up.
And I can sort of see how this is going to be a potential slippery slope in the future when it gets bigger and bigger, when you start dealing with kids. And, you know, I'm going to start thinking, oh, they need to go to the best school. And, you know, I need to have a house in this area where all the cool people are. And I can feel that sort of like treadmill feeling, right?
All right, well, we'll start with a pretty easy question, and that is, what is the worst purchase you have ever made?
But I almost don't want to get off because I don't want to give myself permission to stop working really hard in a way.
By the way, that's been a big, that's helpful in terms of just creating a more responsible lifestyle for sure. Yeah.
That's sort of what I mean, right? I feel like I need to spend to be there. I need to go out with my friends and go to these social events. One of the questions I have on this list here of situations, I'm not going to be specific about who this is, but here's a situation. Your friend is getting married.
and has planned a very big bachelor party, and you look at the agenda, and you realize you're going to have to spend a lot of money on flights, a lot of money on meals, on alcohol, on going out, and it's all beginning to get pretty uncomfortable. But this is a really good friend, and you don't want to just not show up and let them down. So in a way, it's sort of like...
You need to be spending in order to maintain relationships at a certain point in life, I feel like. So I guess, how do you think about that?
Yes, way worse for women, for sure.
The Williams-Sonoma tax. I love that. That's right.
Yeah, I guess it's justβI bring it up because I find it interesting how, as you age, it's like just theβ the financial burdens just accumulate in ways that you didn't really expect. Like the wedding tax that you just described is a very real tax. And planning for those things, I'd like to do it as best I can, but I think it is very difficult because costs just sort of come up out of nowhere.
And the one I'm going to bring up now, which is probably the biggest one, is children. Right. like children are a huge cost. So my question for you is, were you surprised by how much kids cost? And two, do you, to what extent do you sort of budget in the cost of your children? Like, how do you think of your kids as that line item on your income statement?
You love that stuff anyway.
I mean, just how crazy it's gotten. $400,000 to $700,000 a year and you got priced out of New York. Like, it's unbelievable. That's the part that I can't really wrap my head around in, especially living in New York. And that's sort of what this treadmill feeling is. It's like, in order to just get some basics done in New York, you need crazy amounts.
I'm just going to start wrapping us up here. I know you've gotten a lot into philanthropy recently. We were talking about what is essential in life. Is philanthropy essential to you at this point? Is it something that you budget for and You know, are you trying to make more room for giving?
Well, this has been great. Final thought from me. So I feel like spending is kind of like the truest, most accurate reflection of ourselves. Like, you know, we tell ourselves these stories about, oh, this is who I am, and this is what I like, and then we take these personality tests to sort of, like, figure out, oh, yeah, I'm kind of like a EQZ or whatever the fuck that test is.
But it's like, if you just look at how you spend... It's like this data set testimony that says with no biases, like, this is who you are, this is what you care about, this is what you want to achieve, and these are the people who you want to impress. Like, I feel like if you want to understand who you are, you just look at your bank statement.
So we've been talking about your spending, we've been discussing it on this podcast. So I'm wondering, what do you think your spending says about who you are as a person?

What about the BMW you got after you got your bonus from Morgan Stanley? I'm always kind of blown away by the fact that that's how you spent your bonus. I respect it. To be clear.
Where does that rank in your priorities?
Yeah, yeah. Something to think on. Oh, God.
Yeah, my follow-up was going to be, was there ever an item that you splurged on that seemed pretty irresponsible at the time, but ultimately, as you reflect, turned out to be completely worth it? Perhaps the BMW, perhaps something else.

No, that one was worth it. Yeah, I think it's experiences for me too. It's funny, the first thing that comes to mind for me is also Mykonos. There was one night in Mykonos, I went last summer with a bunch of friends, and there was one night that was probably the most amount I've ever spent in a single night, and it was ridiculous. We decided that...
You know, we had picked out what the best club on the island was. And that club is Alamogou. And we decided, okay, me and my boys got together and said, okay, we're going to pay for this whole thing. We're going to, we're going to get all the girls and they're not going to pay a penny. And we're going to just spend like crazy on this one night. On Thursday night, we're going really, really hard.
And so we got the best table at the club. We got one of the biggest bottles that they have on offer. Um, and we kind of just decided like, this is, this is our big night. And, you know, I turned, we're having a great time.
I turned to my left and we're in the VIP section sitting next to the table that is occupied by Paul George, Karl-Anthony Towns, and basically just all of the biggest NBA stars in the world right now. And that was a moment where it's like, okay, this is an amount of money that I don't have, clearly, but I've made a very intentional choice and an intentional decision.
Like, this is something that I know I'm gonna enjoy. I know it's gonna be special. We stayed up till sunrise. It was like the greatest night. ever.
And that to me is like a moment where it was very irresponsible when you think about it numerically, but in terms of like the intention and the purpose behind it, where I was like, I know that I'm spending a lot right now and I'm going to be very responsible when I get home to New York. That was probably my number one.
That was definitely worth it. Okay, what about the best purchase you've ever made?

Are there any categories of spending that you kind of refuse to skimp on or that you pretty consistently go all out on? Something where you look at the price tag and you say, doesn't matter, I'm going to buy this no matter what.

Just as I read through this, it becomes, I think, more clear that likely what happened here is the following.
They have this nuisance lawsuit from Musk, and I think their lawyers came back, OpenAI's lawyers came back and said, say you're becoming a PBC and you inoculate yourself from this, that fundamentally you have the same dynamics are in place here, but you become less prone to any legal argument than Musk is making.
Yeah, I think what he was really saying is, Sam, you're not allowed to make more money than me and have 7 million kids. Anyways.
In some, these kind of swashbuckling maverick finance guys, especially in the investment community, they have a tendency to be, I don't know what's the term, assholes. And this guy isn't. This guy came across as pretty kind, married to the same woman, living in the same house.
One of the things he always said that I adopted, I basically stole, was that the most important decision you'll make your whole life, you get a lot of life advice, was who you decide to marry. And also just someone who is in some ways caring for, my dad's 94, he'll be 95. His mental acuity and his sharpness at 94- Unbelievable. Is just simply remarkable.
My dad was in the Royal Navy, incredible fitness his whole life, genetically blessed. And I can tell you at 94, just wait till you're taking care of a parent at 70 or 80, you're going to realize- This guy is not only remarkable, he's incredibly lucky.
Last week, I went to my own gala.
Gala. I'm sorry. It's the Met Gala. There we go. Met Gala. Gala. Gala. You went to Princeton, right? Anyways, but last week, I had to go to the- No, I'm just a person. Shut the fuck up. I'm telling a joke. Last week, I was invited to the Premature Ejacula Gala, and I came in my jeans.

That sucks. I was hoping for a nice spring week in New York.
Good to see you, Michael. So one of our core theses here is that markets are cyclical. And if you look at the U.S., especially if you include enterprise value or debt, that the U.S. market is just, quite frankly, maybe overvalued. And that if you see multiple contractionβ the types of which we think it's going to happen, it's going to be very difficult for any U.S.
company's earnings to outrun that multiple contraction. And that is we are β and I'm just doing this personally. I'm selling down my U.S. equities, and I'm investing in Asian and European equities. And the thesis is pretty simple. The reason we get 24, 26 β times $1 of earnings in the U.S. is risk aggressiveness, great universities, IP, rule of law, consistency.
It's very, very ugly in New York right now. It is beautiful here. Where, in Hamburg? Yeah. I mean, it's gorgeous. Have you ever been here?
And some of those things seem to be not as dependable as they once were. And we might see a re-rating down. And some, do you buy our thesis that it's time to sell U.S. and buy overseas? Yeah.
I think you'd like it. You come across as very German to me. You're big and handsome and kind of boring. You're very German. You'd fit right in here. Oh, yeah. You're like, I love your content. Oh, yes. It's the one that speaks about the men that are lonely, no? Yeah? Yeah. Everyone's so nice here. Can I get a selfie? It looked like a pretty good crowd.

Oh, I'm our online marketing rock stars. I'm not exaggerating. I think I spoke in front of 11,000 people. Yeah, it looked like a stadium. Yeah. I used to get really nervous. I don't even get nervous anymore. I think it's because I'm barreling so fast towards death. It's like, who cares? Who cares how it goes? That's good. That's a superpower. Yeah. What did you do? Wait, it's the weekend.
Michael, you'd said a few minutes ago that the administration had about six or eight weeks to correct the narrative. What if they don't? Assuming they say they stay very true to the course and start announcing, even if they dial back a little bit, but they continue to announce, dial back a little bit tariffs. What's your projection? How do you think this plays out in the U.S. economy?
What is it, Tuesday? What did you do? Have I seen you? I don't think I've seen you. What did you do this weekend, this past weekend? Okay, that's fascinating. Get to the headlines.
Aren't we setting the table for stagflation?
It strikes me, if he's now willing to tariff media, have you guys considered, or what do you think would be the likely implication of a little bit of aβI always like to waxβ When I got out of college in 1987, the premier job was to be an investment banker for Salomon Brothers, Credit Suisse. You know, all these companies have kind of gone away, and maybe Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley. And J.P.
Morgan was a bit of an afterthought. And over the last 40 years, you guys have, you know, arguably you're the premier financial institution in the world. You're worth more than the seven largest European banks combined. It's been a banner run for you guys.
When you saw those tariffs yesterday or two days ago announced on 100% on movies, do you worry that your industry is next, that he's going to somehow come up with this notion that we have lost and that Deutsche Bank has been taking advantage of us and implement massive tariffs on financial products coming in from abroad? And what would that do to your industry? Do you think that could happen?
I can't imagine how many people ask you for investment advice. I would bet the guy delivering you a newspaper or your landscaper or your friends are constantly trying to sequester you and say, Michael, where should I put my 401k? Given the way the environment, given the context and the atmospherics, What point in history can you point to that's sort of similar to this if there is one?
And two, if you're, say you're Ed's age, right, and you're saving and just starting to invest, how do you play this market? Do you just do what you're supposed to do, dollar cost average in, ETFs? Things have changed so dramatically here that I would think that you probably have to rethink or at least adapt your investment strategy and then talk about someone who's a little bit older.
How do you play this market given the current dynamics?
Do you think we're potentially, we've kind of put ourselves in a pretty vulnerable position and we could be subject to a capital war where just a few nations could coordinate and take the tenure up substantially and quite frankly, just put us in a really ugly spot? Do we risk a capital war?
What's your viewpoint on America's deficits and debt levels right now and how that likely impacts our economy over the next few years?
Thanks for saying that.
Oh, first off... When he threatens a tariff, it has about as much impact as when I threaten to take my 14-year-old's phone away. It's like, I mean, at some point everyone just, I mean, okay, the stocks were down 2%, 3%, 4%.
I need to acknowledge that I tend to be, I'm a glass half empty kind of guy. I was telling people that Tesla was wildly overvalued at 30 bucks a share. Given that, I like what you're saying, you always need to think about what could go right. Is that the way I would be reductive around it? There's few people that see more data than you and Jamie. You literally are at the helm of the bobsled.
You work with the wealthiest people and institutions in the world and see how they're allocating capital and how they're thinking about things. My sense is that pretty much the entire world and wealthy people and organizations and governments are rerouting their entire supply chain around America right now.
I don't know if they're back today, but if this were real, if they thought there was any legitimacy, if this president actually did what he said around tariffs, he is doing what he said he would do around some of the other issues, but tariffs... I mean, A, I don't even know how you would calculate this tariff.
that they no longer see us as the reliable partner that they once viewed us as, and that we're gonna see tremendous structural damage, even if he pulls the knife out of the back of the global economy and says, just kidding around all these tariffs, that the injury is gonna be there and take years to heal. I have never seen... Here's my thesis. I believe this is the biggest own goal in the U.S.
since our entry into Iraq. Your thoughts?
So, yeah, that wasβ National rail, high-speed rail.
The most recent thing I've seen is that they would tariff the amount of the subsidy that goes into that film. And you could argue that, all right, what they're doing is sort of the equivalent of dumping, and that is they subsidize production in Canada, which brings the pricing down, and then they dump that less expensive film back into the U.S.
Thanks, Michael. Thank you very much. Thank you, Scott.
I guess you could make an argument for that, but states do the same thing. On the original scripted Netflix drama that I am an executive producer of, Ed, I don't know if you heard this. I'm doing a drama about big tech. We're likely going to shoot in New Jersey because New Jersey is offering a 30% tax rate.
And Netflix, which has made a lot of people a lot of money and is employing a lot of people in Los Gatos, those people have made a shit ton of money. Now, it has come at the expense of a lot of production executives in Los Angeles, you know, the caterers, the gaffers, the sound people, as now I think over half of Netflix's content budget is spent overseas. So this is an issue.
I don't know how you would even tariff it. And it's also the wrong fight to pick because we are a net exporter. There's very few industries we dominate, maybe with the exception of universities or maybe you can argue weapons. Well, it's not true of technology as well. But one of the industries we absolutely dominate is media.
And this is a gift to a lot of nations who would like to say, okay, you're going to tariff us 100% on content coming back to the U.S. We're going to tariff any content media from the U.S., the next Fantastic Four, Avengers, Big Bang Theory. We're going to tariff 100% because we'd like to prop up our own media efforts and make them, you know, exit them from competitive pressures.
If Netflix, all of a sudden, if Ted Saranda says we're going from $12.99 a month to $17.99 because of tariffs, you have 300 million people or whatever it is, 80% of the households in America have Netflix. We're like, well, okay, I'll vote for the guy that'll bring my Netflix costs down, and it's not this guy. He'll realize that.
He'll start getting calls from Hollywood saying, look, we don't think this works. We don't know how you do it. And he'll say, I'll come up with some sort of weird exemptions and gymnastics. Exactly what he did with Apple.
Yeah, and even if these things go through, which they won't, it's the small and medium-sized production companies and documentary filmmakers that get hurt, not the big guy that's worth several hundred billion dollars. But this won't go through. The notion somehow that we've been the losers here.
I don't know if you saw Buffett's statement, his kind of goodbye or farewell speech, but he was so intelligent. His comments were so insightful, basically saying, The current administration takes this win-lose approach to the global economy.
Yeah, they believe that because China's done well, it must mean that we've done poorly. No, you have toβand I was guilty of this when I was a young man. I used to think that the less I could pay people or the better end of every deal, I would do better. And then what you realize is that if your business partners make really good money, you're going to have a great partnership with it.
if the people working for you make really good money, you're going to have a great company if you can figure out a way to do that. That it's absolutely when other people prosper, you're going to prosper. And he basically said, other nations need to prosper. And if you think that if their children aren't doing well, you can protect our children from that, that's really naive.
Well, by the way, I saw you, you little whore. I saw you on the Bulwark podcast with Tim Miller and another young guy. You were very good. We should actually, let's play a clip of that.

I've always thought that public benefit corporations are essentially massive virtue signaling. These VCs say it's a public benefit corporation, but as long as I get 200x, you know, I'm fine with calling it whatever. I don't really understand what it is other than a bunch of hand-waving and virtue signaling. that is any different about a public benefit corporation. That's right.
And now they're lifting the cap. They're saying, well, the original investors don't get capped at 100x. They're uncapped. I have no idea how effectively this changes anything other than semantics, nomenclature, and some sort of more jazz hands that this company is not going to pursue shareholder value.
