But believe it or not, two years later, there was a fatal accident also with Southwest Airlines because they're huge users of the Boeing 737-800 and 700 and so forth.
And the exact same type of engine had an uncontained failure.
due to a fractured fan blade.
And this did shatter the cabin window.
And the lady passenger was unfortunately sucked out.
And she was seriously injured in that and died when she went to hospital.
The aircraft landed with the damage, but she was unable to be recovered.
So that's the first fatal accident in that regard.
This will be examined in great detail, even as we speak, by probably the Americans and the European Aviation Safety Agency.
And, of course, the manufacturers will have people on site to inspect exactly what went wrong.
They will be able to come up with a conclusion in a matter of days, I think, based on their previous experience of this kind of thing and knowing the way the aircraft engine fractured and damaged and that kind of thing.
And then they will probably issue an emergency inspection release, you know.
Because this can't go on.
You can't have that many aircraft and engines flying around the world with potential damage.
Yeah, I wouldn't be that concerned about it.
I mean, if you've got 34,000 engines, the system of servicing and maintenance of jet engines has come on in leaps and bounds in the last decade, Pat.
Did you know that these engines, the CFM56s, are good for between 15,000 and 18,000 cycles, and then it's examined on condition each time?
In other words, that's the equivalent of 8 to 10 cycles.
years of commercial flights and you know these aircraft are flown 10 or 12 hours a day so when you look back at the number of millions of flying hours on them they're actually remarkably safe much safer than a motor vehicle or that kind of thing so they'll be putting in uh ameliorations this week to see if there's anything have to be done they'll be inspecting aircraft if required easy enough to do it and they'll say right good to go they may of course find more faults one or two or three or four engine types and they will remove those and have them replaced by new jet engines
