And this was so dumb, and I finally figured it out, but I used to think that I put so much of myself and so much of my emotion into writing the lyrics to my songs, and I slaved over them to try to mold them to express what I was feeling, but as I said earlier, to kind of shield myself a little bit in the process.

And I think that I thought to myself that I put so much emotion into that side of it that all I had to do was go in the studio and try to be on pitch and on time, and that was about it.
I didn't think of the fact of an evocative vocal performance.
It just never really occurred to me.
