That's a technical matter.
It's the personal income report that came out last week that said that it was slightly negative.
But personal income includes lots of things like transfers and food stamps and things that we have been reducing as part of our effort to make government leaner and meaner.
And so the best measure right now is to look at the wage data.
That's by far the best measure.
And the real wage data are showing big increases right now.
One of the reasons is that people are spending more on gas, but they're also spending more on everything else, not just groceries, but restaurants and so on.
And I think that that's a sign that you would see when people are optimistic about the future.
Generally, what we see when people are worried they're going to lose their job, which they shouldn't be because in additional claims for unemployment insurance, it's about the lowest they've ever been.
When they're worried they're going to lose their job, that's when they stop spending like crazy and start saving money because they're worried they might have the money for paying their rent.
And so what we're seeing right now is spending based on optimism about the future.
And if you consider how big the boom is going to be like right now, Atlanta Fed's GDP now is about a 4% growth for the current quarter.
If you look at how big the boom will be when the straights open, then it's reasonable for people to be optimistic.
Energy prices are high, and they're high around the world.
Gas prices are high.
That's extremely frustrating, and it's something that we're working on, doing lots of different things to minimize the disruption, and hopefully, again, that the problem of the Gulf will be over soon, and then things will go back to normal.
Well, I can tell you that if you say... And right now, even Economist magazine, everybody's writing stories about the productivity miracle.
We're seeing productivity numbers unlike anything we've seen before.
That gets you about 2.5% growth, and that's probably under-measured, before you have more inputs, before you have more capital or more labor.
And so then the question is, how much extra growth are you going to get from building factories?
