I mean, you didn't know how good in those days.

When you start to go and play, you know,

Dynamo Dresden and Dynamo Berlin and the Russian teams, you had no real idea of their players.

It was like going into almost the unknown.

But we knew that we had a good side and it would take one hell of a side to beat us or we'd have to play really badly.

We were a good side.

We were very much together.

I know people talk about Tommy and Emlyn Hughes not being great friends, but they were on a pitch.

I mean, I never went out with Toshi off a pitch, but wow, we were best friends on it.

We got on well, but we just lived miles apart.

But when that whistle blew, it didn't matter who was in the team.

And of course, the youngsters coming through, like eventually Sammy Lee and Phil Thompson, people like this were brought up on real tough training and real tough games when you played.

I mean, sometimes the hardest games we had in the week

were in Melwood, you know.

Playing against Tommy Smith, for example, wasn't easy, you know, in the five-a-side.

So sometimes Saturday was a bit of a relief.

I think my last game, I think the European Cup final, because Borussia Mönchengladbach were a hell of a side, you know.

And, you know, we'd already won the league, but we'd lost the cup final.

So we were coming on the back of a disappointment.

So I would put that ahead of the 1974 FA Cup final against Newcastle, mainly because Newcastle didn't turn up on the day.
