Yeah, that was probably a really good thing.

A bit lucky.

If there'd been no players in the England squad, I probably wouldn't have gone.

I got to play with Ron Yates once there.

Obviously, Callie played and a guy called Bobby Graham.

Tommy Lawrence and Clem were there.

Smithy and Chris Lawler.

All the ones who weren't in the England squad were there.

So that was the end of the season tour.

And then we had a break and I couldn't wait to get back.

Yeah, I do, but it was just a complete bit of luck.

They'd gone on tour, the first team, to play Ajax, I think, someone in Holland anyway, Utrecht or Ajax, can't remember.

They definitely played Hamburg because it was a team I would join.

And then they came back having not scored many goals and not done so well.

And I'd played for Ronnie Moran, who was taking the reserves at the time.

I'd played at New Brighton and Southport.

And I'd scored a few goals in the games, played quite well.

And I think Ronnie Moran must have said to Bill Shankly, you ought to give this kid a chance because he's got something.

And they used to have a practice match on a Wednesday, red shirts against whites.
