And the political fallout seemed complete on Tuesday, when his highest-profile backer, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, urged him to withdraw.
Plattner has to do so by next Monday, in order for the main Democratic Party to place another candidate's name on the fall ballot.
But party leaders haven't said how they would choose the person to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in one of this year's highest-profile Senate races.

So the state law only says that a political committee can put forward a replacement nominee if the withdrawal takes place before 5 p.m.
next Monday.
So that's on July 13th.
The committee then has two weeks, so until July 27th, to make that selection.
But the process is entirely left open to the party.

Plattner has denied the accusations first reported by Politico that he sexually assaulted a former dating partner.
The chair and co-chair of the Maine Democratic Party have called on him to resign, as did B.J.
McAllister, who represents Maine on the Democratic National Committee.
Plattner handily won last month's primary to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins this fall.
The Democratic State Committee can choose his replacement as long as he drops out by next Monday.
