And what happens when you do that?
Nothing.
Nothing bad happens when you get rid of the debt.
We need to think of debt cancellation as a type of mental health care.
We need to actually change the way we think about mental health care and expand it.
If the cause of your mental distress is something structural, the solution needs to be structural as well.
The problem is that in medicine, we are given such a small toolbox to work with, you know, therapy, medications, that we end
End up
disguising these these structural determinants and therefore closing off opportunities for intervention that could be really helpful to improve the lives of people at scale, at grand scale.
You know, the global mental health movement is so focused on, well, how do we scale these interventions?
Um, how do we get them to reach millions of people all over the world?
You know, people are interested in replicating people always like, oh, you you've worked on the friendship bench.
We would love to put a friendship bench in our town or city.
And I I keep trying to explain that's not the point.
You know, yes, that works well in that context and that culture for those people, but the point is not to put a million friendship benches all over the world.
The point is to think of
Things that are high high enough level, structural enough, that the scale comes from working at a higher sociopolitical structure than just at the individual level.
And medicine has been and continues to disguise the fact that that is what we need to be doing when we think about scaling mental health care.
I think three main ways.
The first is that, you know, these disciplines are individualizing.
