You know, we ask patients two questions about their symptoms of mental distress in the last two weeks.
And um from that, we can flag whether they're screening positive or not for depression.
And if they are screening positive, we're like, oh gosh, now what do we do with this?
Okay, now time is already ticking.
I've spent eight minutes dealing with all.
of the the other things.
And I have two minutes left.
What do I do now?
Okay, I can refer this patient to a psychiatrist.
I can refer this patient to a therapist.
Both of those have very long waiting lists, but they're clearly extremely stressed right now.
And so we can have a conversation about medication.
And often we end up putting people on an SSRI or similar kind of medication.
um to help them to cope with what is going on.
Because in the confines of that very, very brief encounter, seeing a patient in distress who's there asking you to help, it's all you are able to offer.
And this is what I want people to realize about overmedicalization.
You know, one-sixth of Americans are on SSRIs at the moment.
And, you know, some people who are experiencing extreme, you know, symptoms um can really benefit from these drugs.
But many people have been put on these drugs.
