And so I couldn't figure out what to do.
And my preceptor, who is extremely just thoughtful about this type of thing, said to me, Well
Why don't you just bring her back?
And I said, Okay.
So I told her, come back and see me next week.
And eventually I started to see her weekly or every other week, very often.
Um, and we'd have these hour-long appointments.
And, you know, within a few appointments, I dealt with all of her medical things.
I had done her pap smears, I had done all of her vaccines, I made sure that she was on top of her diabetes medicine and I tinkered with her blood pressure pills to make sure they were just right.
Um
And we ended up getting time to learn about each other.
I told her some about my life, um, but I also listened for what was going on in her life.
I learned that she was um, you know, living on the edges of poverty and homelessness.
She was taking care of her mother, um, who is elderly and frail, um, and and she was, you know, in this kind of housing insecure state.
Um, and
Sometimes I was able to give her very practical advice, like, oh well, why don't you change your schedule around and you know, do that first and then go see your mom afterwards.
That was a very kind of like, you know, on a day-to-day practical thing.
Um and just listening to those troubles in her her daily life, that's a type of a type of empathy and care that, you know, a primary care doctor doesn't often have the time to provide.
Just seeing them as a whole.
