Where it was difficult to grow food, difficult to raise livestock.
They had a scorched earth policy which killed all the crops of indigenous people and made it very difficult for them to raise animals.
And that forced so many people into starvation.
You know, people died not just from the direct violence of encountering the military.
But from the kind of slow death that came with that type of settler colonialism.
And it's not like that was what all of the land in Zimbabwe looked like.
Zimbabwe is an incredibly arable place with wonderful agricultural reserve.
And the British took that land and those natural resources for themselves and they built a thriving export economy.
off of it.
They also created an apartheid state where they restricted movement, segregated neighborhoods, segregated schools.
Um and my parents still grew up in that apartheid state where they weren't allowed to go to white schools, uh white public schools, they weren't allowed to go to restaurants and bars.
Um and my father's and mother's childhood were affected by those conditions.
My mother had
A white stepfather who, you know, was extremely, extremely violent within the home.
I won't go into the details of what that violence looks like because, you know, I don't feel like that's necessary, but created conditions that were extremely hard on her childhood.
Um, you know, in in mental health research, we measure childhood adversity using the ACES score, adverse childhood.
um experiences.
And if you have four or more aces, you essentially have um a greater risk of developing mental illness, a substance use disorder, and also physical illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.
And my mother had eight out of the ten aces um because she had such a, you know, tumultuous and violent childhood.
