On the evening of January 28th, the Sunday night before everything changed,
Amber was at home.
She had brought a new video game back with her from the store, and she and her dad Randy sat down and played it together.
It was the kind of thing they did all the time.
Video games had become this shared language between them, this space where they could just be together without needing to say anything or make it into anything dramatic.
Amber had brought home a pink controller from the store at some point as well, and that became hers for these games that they played together.
That Sunday night, they sat in the same room, they played, and it was just an ordinary and comfortable night.

People who might've walked past a storefront that morning and noticed the lights were off and the door was still locked,
probably didn't think much of it.
