But the knowledge that there is this elite class of people who run hedge fund like operations to bet on sports, I still think it hasn't quite seeped out into the consciousness in the UK and maybe not in the US either.
Why do you think that is?
I think part of it is that when you're really good at this, you don't talk about it.
I mentioned this in the book.
If you are the world's best gambler on tennis,
It is very definitely not in your interests for anyone to know your name and what you do for a living.
It causes all sorts of problems, not least of which you're liable to be excluded from any betting betting platform you're using.
No one will take your bets.
But there's other reasons, too.
I mean, you know, just like in financial markets, any edge, any advantage you have has a time limit.
It's a ticking clock.
As soon as you get your advantage, eventually the rest of the market will wake up to it.
So there's sort of ingrained secrecy at the very top level here that meant that those stories haven't really been told extensively.
At least they hadn't a few years ago.
Well, I sort of stumbled into this world of computer assisted wagering, the elite people who the one percent who can do it really well.
And I wanted to understand how they came to exist.
You know, how do you get a job like this, especially in the 1970s and 80s when no one had a computer?
How is it that these guys develop this very unique skill set?
And I sort of just traced back their stories to a particular place in time, which was Las Vegas in around the 1978, 79 through to the early 80s, when gambling science kind of exploded.
And it was a combination of different things happening.
