Major Robert Bolton Rogers Dee, 40, passed away on June 15th, 2026,
during a routine B-52 test flight at Edwards Air Force Base, California, while serving as a United States Air Force test pilot.
Robert was born October 10, 1985, in Santa Monica, California, and moved to Cupertino, California, in 1988.
He loved Cupertino and had deep roots here.
He always referred to Cupertino as his hometown.
He graduated from Apple Computer Preschool, Grammar School at Freya A+, Middle School at Kennedy, and then Monta Vista High School in 2004.
While at Monta Vista, he played football for four years and was CCS All League player.
He was a Cupertino Boy Scout Troop 470 and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
He continued his education at Danza College where he earned associate degree in the automotive field and obtained his ASE certification.
He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State University, and in 2014, he completed a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
Commissioned through the San Jose State Stanford University Air Force ROTC program on June 23, 2014, Major Dee completed pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base and was selected to fly the B-52H Stratoforsterus.
After completing B-52 formal training at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, he was assigned to the 23rd Bomb Squadron in the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.
From February 2017 through May 2023, Major Dee served as a B-52 pilot, weapons and tactics officer, wing data link manager, and instructor pilot for the 5th Operation Support Squadron.
During his time at Minot, he deployed to Guam in 2019 and took part in operations supporting the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
His leadership significantly enhanced the B-52's tactical data link capabilities and combat readiness across the wing.
Major Dee then went on to earn a Master of Science in Flight Test Engineering from the prestigious U.S.
Air Force Test Pilot School in 2024 and was assigned to the 419th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
There he served as a B-52 test evaluator pilot, chief of B-52 test, and chief of training.
His work was instrumental in modernizing the B-52 fleet, including leading the first flight of a new radar system and accelerating certification of critical data link and breaking system upgrades that will support the B-52 for decades to come.
