And it is a moment that every subsequent president will actually contribute to, including Clinton and everybody else will continue to kind of erode at that social safety net.

You know, that renaissance that what they would call at the time, as I know you remember, right, the Giuliani miracle that happens in, say, New York.

But one of the things that I think that you'll see is that this is all connected to what we were just talking about.

So once we start to free up taxes and we start to have this very popular message that the problem is with people, the problem is with the undeserving, the problem was with the criminal element.

people like Giuliani are very savvy, right?

He's part of the sketch story too.

And they're very savvy.

They understand that this is a message that sells, but also when you free up monies at the top, you can invite businesses in, you can invite that kind of redevelopment, and you touch off this kind of moment of gentrification.

And all of that

feels really good when you're coming into a city.

Times Square, right, goes from feeling under siege to feeling a bit like Disneyland.

And it does feel like an economic miracle.

But there is the other side of that, right, which is

The explosion in incarceration in New York City and in New York and around the country, the hyper-policing that goes on that leads in New York City to stop and frisk, tons of people being pulled over with no criminal charges.

And it leads to a pushing out of that poverty into other boroughs, other neighborhoods.

This happens, of course, across the country.

And so what I think we're seeing now, which is super interesting in a place like New York, is it's wearing thin.

What's wearing thin is this idea that the private sector can save everybody, that cutting taxes at the top, while it makes everything glitzy and brings Gucci to your downtown, it doesn't happen.

actually make people more prosperous.

Income inequality is more severe now than it has been since the Gilded Age.
