Susan Lee Vaughan was born on September 26, 1971, in Union, South Carolina.

And she was the only daughter and the youngest of three kids.

And her mother, Linda, was a homemaker, and her father, Harry Ray, was a firefighter who later went to work in the textile mills.

Now, her parents, Linda and Harry Ray Vaughn, had a marriage marked by violence, and in time they would divorce.

And on top of that,

Harry drank, and he had convinced himself that Linda was being unfaithful.

And the fighting would frighten the children, naturally.

One playmate's mother remembered Susan as quote unquote unusual and sad, and would say Susan would stare in space like she wasn't there.

But whenever her father was around, though, Susan would light up.

Now, only two weeks after the divorce was final, Linda remarried, and her new

Husband was Beverly Russell Jr., a divorced father of three.

And three weeks after that, on January 15th, 1978, Harry Ray would take his own life.

And at this point, Susan would only be six years old.

She had been close to her father and held on to pieces of him, including his coin collection and a recording of his voice.

Now, Russell was a man of standing in Union.

Owned an appliance store downtown and was a wealthy businessman.

And he had sat on the executive committee of the state Republican Party and was a prominent member in the Christian coalition.

So Susan and her brothers would move out of their modest house and into Russell's home in one of the best parts of town.
