And it was a take-home test with no time limit, no supervision, and no way to verify how the answers were reached.
Why does this test exist?
I don't know.
So the whole thing just ran on a BS honor system.
And by his account, the first 43 problems took him about two hours, and the final five stretched across four more days and another eight hours of work.
And the completed test sat with him for weeks before he finally sent it in.
But once it was submitted, Rainier called Hofflin and told him one of the
Easier questions contained a copying mistake.
And Hofflin accepted the argument and credited him with the correct response.
And without that extra point, Rainier would have scored below both Marilyn Vos Savant and Eric Hart, and the claim of being the smartest person in the world would have been off the table.
So his final score was 46 out of 48.
And then he would join the Mega Society.
Essentially took charge of it.
And the society had 26 members before Rainier showed up.
And by the time he was done, three were left.
And from there, he conducted his own study on the statistical rarity of his test score.
Of course, because he needed to show everyone how awesome he was, even though it was just all BS because it was an honor system test.
