A lot of the Nordics, except for Norway, like us, are in the EU.
And we are...
I want to say maybe there are technical aspects to this, but we're one of the only countries or few countries that has never actually seen an agreement to join the EU.
We've never had a vote on this.
The people have never gotten to have a say on whether they want to fully join the EU or not.
We went down this route in 2010 after the financial crisis.
And then at that point, the government started these negotiations or these talks with the EU.
And it was during a very difficult time for Iceland.
We were, I want to say, sort of on our knees.
We were financially insecure.
Our identity was broken.
This was seen as a way to sort of fix every issue that we had in a short term.
And then we had a new government come in in 2013 and the talks sort of just withered out.
Mm-hmm.
And at the time, there was always a talk about, okay, if we reopen these talks, we will get a mandate to do it.
Because for any nation, especially for a small country, this takes a lot of energy.
It takes oxygen out of the governing system to do this.
And so this has been the idea for probably like 10 to 15 years, that if we go down this route again, we will ask people, do you want us to spend time on this or not?
It's a referendum on getting a deal.
Like, do you want us to reopen talks, finish the negotiations?
