We're seeing more players and teams mutually agreeing to terminate their contracts.
I have an unlikely hypothetical that I'm curious if there are specific rules against.
If a player and team mutually agree to terminate their contract, can they simply re-sign a new contract with each other after the contract is terminated?
Let's say a team really needs a few million in cap space to sign another player.
Player and goes to a veteran who has made a lot of money in his career and asks if they could set up a new lower AAV contract, or a star player making significantly less than his value due to the rising cap and tells the team, let's get a new contract or trade me.
I know the incentives will rarely, if ever, be aligned, and contract termination needs to be mutually exclusive.
