That woman was Edith Martin.
Thomas told police that as he followed her toward South Attleboro, he felt an urge to kill.

He told police that he was the one who killed Nancy Ann Frenier.
According to police, Thomas said he encountered Nancy at the shopping center in Rumford on December twenty second, nineteen sixty-one.
He got into her Oldsmobile, put a knife to her neck, and forced her to drive away from the parking lot toward the secluded area near the East Providence Reservoir.
The car became stuck near the water, so Thomas said he forced Nancy out and made her walk toward the reservoir.
When she tried to get away, he struck her in the head with a piece of wood.
He then broke through the ice near the shoreline and put Nancy into the water.
But his account didn't end there.
Thomas said that about a week later, while Nancy's family was still searching for her and police still considered her a missing person, he went back to the reservoir.
