I then got in touch with Professor Arday and we had a series of interviews in which he told me about what he alleged was happening to him.

And he broke that down into two parts, really.
The first part was a campaign of kind of academic harassment or intimidation, people going through his work, asking questions about many, many details and seemingly just trying to find something that they could kind of blow up and turn into an issue for him.
The second part of it, which was more dramatic and probably, well, definitely more concerning, was a campaign of physical intimidation that he said he'd been suffering.
So he said that...
A bullet had been sent through the post to his Cambridge address.
He said banana had been sent to his post to his Cambridge address, that a substance marked as poisonous had been sent to him.
He also said that there'd been two break-ins into his faculty building in the university in which a masked man had managed to get into his office and threaten him twice, the second time with a knife.
And he also said that a severed pig's head had been sent to his parents' house in South London.
I mean, when he initially told me, I thought this is an absolutely massive story.
Easily the biggest thing that I will have worked on up to that point.
But first and foremost, we needed to obviously figure out, you know, could we stand up some of these allegations?
So through the interviews, I gradually got more and more details about what Professor Ade was saying.
So the stuff about the academic intimidation, there was a paper trail for that, which was pretty well established.
And I think whether or not you describe it as academic harassment or fair scrutiny, that's a debate.
But there was definitely something solid there that we could have worked with.
The second side of it, the pig's head, the bullet in the post, I started to go through these things one by one and talk to Professor Arday about them.
The first thing to say was that Professor Arday didn't have any pictures of any of this stuff.
