And it's about their relationship and their lives, but also their lives with Mr. Berman's wife, who's dead at the beginning of the book, Ada, who's a doctor, and the daughter, Layla, who, when I began reading the book and I read the opening scene with Layla,

Oh my God, Leila's just stayed with me.

I sort of feel such sympathy for Leila as this unbearably pained, quite miserable daughter.

And she's their only child.

I have great sympathy and a sort of astonishment for your ability to write about their relationship.

But within these kind of four, three or four protagonists are

lots of other small stories.

So there is Raph's aunt, who I think it just appears very briefly, but I think is a really key character in how the story unfolds.

There's Raph's solicitor.

So the man who's kind of, the woman who's working from Serena, her story in about three pages.

I sort of kept having these dreams about the characters and thinking, is that person in the book or is that another book I've read?

Because each character,

could have opened up into another whole book.

For example, Billy, The Neglected Son at Sutcliffe's Restaurant.

Oh my God, that story's just amazing.

These are like little snippets throughout the story that are just throughout the book.

And fascinating and hilarious walk-on parts from the cop, the guy in prison who fixes the...

The manacles.

Oh my God, Monica, who I think Mr. Berman has a one night stand with possibly or a snog or something.

And all of these characters are sort of sewn together on, I can't believe I wrote this in my notes, a bedspread, just scrap that.
