There's a line that you have early in the book talking about Mr Berman, so Leila...
gets her door, gets a padlock put on the door so her father can't come in.
It's like everybody's actually being, she locks herself in, he locks himself out of the house and then Raph is locked up.
There's lots of kind of very careful repetitions and echoes and vibrations in the book actually that I found myself thinking it's like the book itself is an astonishing work of architecture where you've created all these kind of sewn together, all these careful echoes.
But there's a moment at the beginning of the book when he talks about the fact that he's been locked out of the room.
And I think she says, I don't want you looking at me on social media.
And he's like, well, I wouldn't want to look on you on social media.
And he says, he lacked faith in the depth of his daughter's mysteries.
He was afraid of finding nothing strange in her unknowns.
What an awful thing to think about your child.
So where did you get that character from?
Where did I get that from?
Yeah, where did you?
I don't have a grown-up daughter, but just to be clear about this.
No.
Yeah, I mean, it was kind of, I did find, then there's a later bit where he has this fantasy that him and Ada and Raph and Leila are all bound together to encompass something grand.
And I just thought you're such a fool.
That is tragic, middle-aged man trying to make your life more interesting.
And actually, you're a kind of miserable git who's like living out your fantasies through wrath.
And a snob.
