Sometimes the lore of a lost album is better than the music itself.
Thankfully, Gravest Gravy by the Kramps is a punk treasure.
The story goes in October of nineteen seventy-seven, the band drove down to Memphis to record some songs with Alex Chiltern from Big Star.
Some of those recordings turned up on early singles and the rest went undiscovered until Henry Rollins and Ian McCain, you know, the uncles of hardcore punk got a hold of them.
And listening to these sessions, I can't help but marvel at how the cramps had already had its sound and shtick down.
Ghoulishly over-the-top vocal performances by Lux Interior, pounding drums, fuzzed out riffs, and the ancient rock and roll guitar manifestations of Poison Ivy, who, by the way, is one of my favorite guitarists of all time.
You get early versions of songs that would end up on later albums, plus some truly grimy covers of Roy Orberson and Paul Revere and the Raider songs.
This is punk in its most primal form.
