I guess I'll get in the car then.

And obviously we crashed.

And I remember sort of staggering out of that car with the noise of the car horn blaring and thinking, oh, do I have concussion?

And getting into my apartment and finding out that I'd been out so long that my dog had eaten through my luggage and eaten all the vitamin C tablets and had puked up big puddles of orange foam.

And in the middle of all that, I thought, this is a great start to a novel.

Someone staggering out of a car crash.

And I was really fixated with that image of the car crash.

I think we're in such a moment of doubles and doppelgängers.

It seems fitting.

You know, we all have our digital selves and our finsters.

We live in this paranoid moment of conspiracy theories.

You know, Melania Trump has been replaced by a body dropper.

You know, this kind of, we're in this mad moment.

Everyone is filtered online.

Everyone is having facelifts to look like everybody else.

against a sort of political landscape of double-speak, I suppose.

You know, we're here to deliver for the ordinary working man, which means siphon money to the world's most wealthy.

Or this is about freedom of speech, which means silencing and harassing the most vulnerable people.

It does kind of make sense to make a sort of novel about doubles and doppelgangers.

There are a lot of doubles and doppelgangers in the book.
