Uh the the the the the the lineage of the ru uh predates Confucius, certainly.
Um and Confucianism was constructed as a category by Christian missionaries.
So the root, you know, how to translate that term?
Does it mean scholar?
Does it mean literati?
Does it mean uh ritual master?
It it kind of pulls in all of these dimensions of what the Rue were up to in terms of both scholars and government officials, but also people who could uh conduct civic and f and and and family uh ceremonies, so sort of like ancestor reverence ceremonies and rites.
So
Rethinking what we mean by scholarship on the model of Ruist theories and methodologies, that's something I'm interested in in general.
And then in the pro in the in the context of this book, right, bringing in someone like Ju Xi, who is so much speaking to
his understanding of his own disciplinary practices, if we think about the Rue lineage as it's as a discipline here.
that it it gives us these tools that we can take back to students and say, you know, what is philosophy anyway, right?
Is philosophy also this formative process?
Is it also this process of moral or maybe even spiritual self cultivation?
Um
That that's why someone like Ju Xi, I think, when you're looking for good pedagogical resources for teaching philosophy diversely, his texts just offer themselves up um as something students can really grab onto because you know he'll say
Don't read a book just to pass the test.
You know, you really need the you need to read the book, you need to read it a few times, you really need to try to accept the book on its own terms and let the book change you.
You know, he's a very inspiring writer about the power of reading.
And so that's that's just one of it's one of those moments that I think it provides a chance for an intervention in prevailing discourses.
